On September 22, Ukrainian news agency Ukrinform reported that Secretary General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Jens Stoltenberg has just announced that NATO will not admit Ukraine as a member until the conflict in this country ends.
He made the statement during a presentation at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York (USA). In the statement, Mr. Stoltenberg emphasized that the ongoing conflict does not allow NATO to invite Ukraine to join the military organization immediately. The NATO Secretary General suggested that Ukraine could become a member of the bloc after the conflict ends. According to him, NATO membership, ending the conflict and ensuring lasting peace after the conflict are related issues.
He asserted that providing Ukraine with Western-style weapons and training Ukrainian soldiers is helping the country move closer to becoming a NATO member.
NATO has recognized Ukraine as an outstanding potential partner in 2020.
