The US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) will survey ultraviolet light across the sky to learn how galaxies and stars form and evolve.
The UltraViolet Explorer (UVEX) telescope will launch in 2030 as part of NASA’s upcoming Mid-Earth Astrophysics Exploration Mission. In addition to its highly sensitive all-sky survey capability, UVEX will also be able to rapidly detect ultraviolet light sources in the universe. This will enable the telescope to capture images of the explosions that follow gravitational wave collisions during neutron star mergers. UVEX will also carry an ultraviolet spectrometer to study stellar explosions and massive stars.
NASA believes UVEX will help us better understand the nature of galaxies near and far, as well as track the constant events in the ever-changing universe. The mission will expose important capabilities in the near and far ultraviolet to space telescopes, providing a wealth of survey data that will open new doors in the exploration of the mysterious universe.
