SAIC Group said that MG's solid-state battery electric vehicle will be launched in 2025, with long range and low production cost.

The timeline has just been announced earlier than expected. Previously, Chinese domestic electric vehicle brand IM, which is part of the SAIC group, announced that the L6 sedan with a solid-state battery version will go into production this fall. According toAutocar, a senior SAIC official once said that some other electric car models in the same group will receive this technology "within the next 12 months".

Many automakers around the world believe that solid-state batteries will revolutionize the electric vehicle industry, and are racing to adopt the technology. BMW says it will launch a car with them by 2030, Toyota by 2027, and MG says it won’t be ready until 2026.

That timeline has now changed to an earlier launch date, if Yu Jingmin, executive vice president of SAIC’s passenger car division, is correct. While he did not reveal which MG model would be the first to feature a solid-state battery, he did say it would be launched in the second quarter of 2025, with sales before the end of the year.

Solid-state batteries have twice the energy density of current electric vehicle batteries, allowing for greater range, but in smaller, lighter weights and lower manufacturing costs.

SAIC's L6 sedan uses 133 kWh solid-state battery technology, providing a range of 1,000 km, and a 12-minute charge can allow the car to travel 400 km.
