Videos, audio, and images generated by AI or modified by AI will be labeled "generated by AI" by Meta to distinguish them from other products.
On April 5, American technology giant Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, said it will start labeling content generated by artificial intelligence (AI) from next May.
This is considered the company's effort to reassure users and governments about the risks of deepfakes technology.
Specifically, videos, audio, and images that are generated by AI or have their content altered by AI will be labeled as “created by AI” by Meta to differentiate them from other products. In addition, Meta will also prominently label content that is at high risk of causing misunderstandings in communities.
In a statement, Meta's vice president of content policy, Monika Bickert, said the labels address concerns raised by Meta's oversight board about the need to rethink its approach to AI-driven content, especially amid growing concerns about the widespread misuse of AI-powered applications to generate misinformation during a crucial election year in the US and elsewhere.
Previously, Meta, Google, and OpenAI agreed to use a common standard to tag AI-generated or altered content to improve transparency.
