"I'm tired. I'll take you to the nanny. The baby is playing well, I'll pick you up tomorrow," said Nguyen Bich Hang (30 years old, from Hai Phong), with a haggard face and tears streaming down her face, recounting the last words she said to her 7-month-old son before sending him to the nanny and losing him forever.

"With children, life is no longer lonely"

Born in Hai Phong city, Hang left her family to go to Ho Chi Minh City to earn a living at the age of 20. In 2019, she returned to Hanoi, rented an apartment in Gia Lam district (Hanoi), worked as a makeup artist and sold products online.

A few years later, she met a guy and "accidentally" got pregnant, but her boyfriend refused to take responsibility. At that time, she was not mentally or physically ready to have a child, so she often hesitated about whether to keep the child or not.

During the first weeks of pregnancy, she had a fall and miscarriage, but the fetus "stayed". "My child coming to me was fate". Despite everything, with maternal love, Hang overcame all the rumors, decided to give birth and become a single mother.

Earning a living alone in the capital and taking care of her fetus sometimes makes the young mother tired and exhausted. But her motherly instinct helps her overcome difficulties and persevere to wait for her child to be born.

On International Children's Day, June 1, 2022, she gave birth to a 3.8kg baby boy. "His face was wrinkled and looked "old", so I called him Tao Tau", Ms. Hang clearly remembers the day her baby was born, she burst into tears of happiness.

"Knowing that his mother is having a hard time, Tao Tau is very understanding, well-behaved, doesn't cry or get sick." Her motivation to try is to hope her child is healthy and grows up so that "mother and child can accompany and rely on each other."

"Having a child makes life more joyful and meaningful," said Ms. Hang, comparing her son's birth to a salvation that helps her no longer be lonely.

One time sending a child becomes a lifelong pain

On January 9, 2023, after more than a week of being sick and unable to be treated at home, Hang was forced to be hospitalized.

Through a social network group of urban residents, Hang learned that Chu Uyen Van (27 years old, living in Hoang Mai, Hanoi) accepts overnight babysitting for 250,000 VND/night.

Trusting, that same evening, she prepared clothes, prepared a bottle of milk, and brought her baby to the next building to leave with Van. This was also the first time she left her baby with someone else.

At around 8:15 a.m. on January 10, she received a phone call from Van in a state of panic, informing her that her child had choked on milk.

Hurriedly catching a taxi from the hospital to the apartment, Hang was stunned to see her child lying in the ambulance, "his whole body pale, cold, eyes not closed". She picked up her child, collapsed, and cried.

The single mother was asked by the authorities to conduct a forensic examination of her child. However, as a mother, she did not want to lose her child and suffer more pain. She brought her child's body back to her hometown for burial.

At the time of registering the death, she encountered some difficulties due to previous errors in the paperwork, and was unable to obtain a birth certificate for her child. However, to register the death, a birth certificate is required.

The local authorities then facilitated the completion of all paperwork and procedures for the family to register the baby's death. "I received the baby's death certificate first, and a week later I received the birth certificate," Ms. Hang said, wiping away tears.

Although her son has passed away, all of his belongings are still kept intact in the small apartment.

The mother chose to preserve the memories, even though "every time I look at my child's belongings my heart aches", but she "is obsessed with it", Hang choked up.

Bury the child and then have to bring the body up.

Hang said that since her son passed away, the nanny did not come to burn incense, only sending an apology via text message. This woman also posted on social media denying responsibility, challenging and blaming her.

Feeling resentful, she then decided to request an exhumation, forensic examination, and justice for her child. "Burying my child and then having to dig him up again, causing him further pain, I felt like my heart was being torn to pieces," Ms. Hang shared, choking with tears.

However, in mid-May 2023, the police announced that the case was temporarily suspended due to the expiration of the verification period. After losing her child and being tormented, Hang fell into depression, suffered from frequent insomnia, and had to take medication to stabilize her mind.

At that time, she thought "there was no more hope, she wanted to follow her child", but luckily an acquaintance discovered her and took her to the emergency room in time.

Two months later, nanny Chu Uyen Van was prosecuted by Gia Lam District Police for involuntary manslaughter. After many days of fighting, she initially found justice for her child.

On November 28, Ms. Hang brought her son's portrait to the court to attend the trial of nanny Chu Uyen Van. Throughout the trial, the female defendant did not once turn her face to look at the victim's mother.

In court, Van remained calm and clearly confessed to his crime. Van said that at the time the baby choked on milk, he was so panicked that he did not know how to perform first aid. He admitted that he did not have a professional certificate and was not licensed to babysit.

In her final words, the nanny said that the defendant felt very remorseful and remorseful for letting the incident happen, "hoping that the family would sympathize and that the jury would give her a chance to correct her mistakes."

The court assessed that the defendant's criminal behavior was dangerous to society, violated the lives of others, and caused great loss to the child's mother, so he was sentenced to 15 months in prison.

Hearing the verdict, the victim's mother burst into tears, saying that the defendant's sentence was too light and that the family would continue to appeal.

The trial ended, and it was getting dark. Ms. Hang walked unsteadily, crying: "My child, I'm sorry for giving you to the wrong person."
