After Tran Thanh, Ly Hai is the second director of Vietnamese cinema to have a film with total revenue exceeding 1,000 billion VND.
After 7 parts, the total revenue of the "Flip Side" brand has reached 1,000 billion VND. Ly Hai officially became the "trillionaire" director of Vietnamese cinema. At the same time, "Flip Side" is also the film series with the highest total revenue in the history of Vietnamese cinema.
Specifically, "Lat mat" (2015) had a revenue of 72 billion VND, "Lat mat: Phim truong" earned 80 billion VND, "Lat mat: Ba chang khuyet" had a revenue of more than 85 billion VND. "Lat mat: Nha co khach". "Lat mat 5" brought in 150 billion VND, "Lat mat 6: The ticket of destiny" pocketed more than 300 billion VND. According to statistics from Box Office Vietnam, "Lat mat 7: Mot giau uoc" currently has a revenue of 238 billion VND.
"Flip Side" is recognized as the film series with the fastest revenue growth rate, and is also a film series that is always in the top of the highest-grossing films in the history of Vietnamese cinema.
After 10 years, Ly Hai has become one of the most successful producers and directors in the film industry, opening up the trend of making franchise films on Vietnamese screens.
Ly Hai and the series "Lat mat" always renew themselves and experiment with many different genres to attract audiences. His films all have separate content, genres ranging from action, comedy, psychology, horror, thriller, romance, creating a strange "mouth" for the public.
When asked about revenue pressure, Ly Hai said: "The pressure is only fear of loss, but if we break even or more, we can earn as much as we want. Of course, no one wants low revenue when making a film. But Ly Hai himself always sets a goal for himself that the next part must be better than the previous part to let himself know that he is not stuck in the same place."
"Revenue is not my top priority. When you focus too much on money, you will lose your "feeling", no longer be natural when working, be constrained, feel heavy. I just think about making my product the best, revenue will automatically come. Instead of worrying about revenue all day, doing this, doing that costs money, I will spend that time thinking about what is better to do", Ly Hai shared.
Before Ly Hai, Tran Thanh was the first director to achieve this feat. Tran Thanh's three films, "Bo Gia", "Nha Ba Nu" and "Mai", had a total revenue of over 1,400 billion VND.
Of which, "Bo Gia" (2021) and "Nha Ba Nu" (2023) have revenue of 395 billion VND and 459 billion VND respectively (according to Box Office Vietnam).
"Mai" is the third film directed by Tran Thanh, released on the occasion of Lunar New Year 2024. The film currently holds the record for the highest revenue in Vietnamese box office history with 520 billion after 41 days in theaters, selling 6.5 million tickets.
"Mai" has been a project that Tran Thanh has devoted a lot of effort to over the past time. The project has a production budget of about 50 billion VND - an unbelievably large number for a work in the psychological and emotional genre of Vietnamese cinema.
In North America, the film grossed $1.66 million and in Europe $341,000.
From an "amateur", after 4 years of entering the film industry, Tran Thanh has gradually been recognized as one of the "box office guarantee" directors of the domestic film market. Tran Thanh once told the press: "I want to make films that have viewers". And every film he releases attracts a large audience, exactly as he set out to do.
Many people believe that Tran Thanh won big thanks to knowing how to choose film topics and how to tell stories that appeal to the psychology and tastes of the majority of the audience.
