On April 9, the Tien Giang Department of Health announced the above results, stating that the 29% alcohol content Cherry wine samples were produced at Kha Thy Company Limited (Tan Ly Dong Commune, Chau Thanh), tested at the Ho Chi Minh City Institute of Public Health.

According to the results, the Cherry wine used by the victim, produced on June 9, 2024 (expiry date 3 years), contained Methanol content up to 10,730,571 mg/l of 100° ethanol. This number is 1,073.05 times higher than the permitted level, and was determined to be the cause of the poisoning.

In addition, another sample of rice wine with 40% alcohol concentration, also produced by this company, tested positive for 12,184,266 mg/l of 100° ethanol, 6,092.13 times higher than the permitted level.

Previously, a group of officials from the People's Court of Tan Phu Dong District (Tien Giang) organized a trip to Ninh Thuan. On the night of March 29, 8 people drank more than 6 bottles of fruit wine, each bottle about 500 ml.

The next morning, the group showed signs of digestive disorders, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, thinking it was due to drunkenness, so they moved to Tien Giang. On the way, the victims' symptoms worsened, and they were taken to Can Giuoc Regional General Hospital in Long An for emergency treatment, then transferred to Cho Ray Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City. The youngest of the 25-year-old victims fell into a deep coma and died a day later.

After the Ministry of Health requested clarification, Tien Giang province authorities took samples for testing.

Currently, one patient has been transferred to Tien Giang General Hospital for treatment, the remaining 6 people are in stable health and have returned to work as usual.

Methanol (CH3OH) is an extremely toxic substance, often used as a solvent in industrial products such as paint, glass cleaner, or printing ink... When introduced into the body, methanol is converted into formaldehyde and formic acid, causing damage to the liver, brain and other internal organs. Methanol poisoning can cause dangerous symptoms such as confusion, respiratory failure, convulsions, brain damage and death.

Many serious alcohol poisoning cases have occurred recently. In early January, a 28-year-old man had difficulty breathing and was lethargic after drinking alcohol. He was rushed to Bach Mai Hospital in a state of severe metabolic acidosis and coma due to methanol poisoning. The patient had to be put on a ventilator and had his blood filtered for 8 hours, but still lost his reflexes and developed serious brain hemorrhage complications, and later died.

On December 22, 2024, five people were poisoned by methanol, one of whom died outside the hospital, after drinking alcohol at a wedding in Thuong Tin district, Hanoi. Test results of alcohol samples showed that the methanol concentration was 34%.
