Regarding the case of one death and four hospitalizations due to alcohol poisoning in Thuong Tin (Hanoi), test results showed that the methanol content in the alcohol causing poisoning exceeded the threshold by more than 40 times.
On July 30, the Hanoi Food Safety and Hygiene Department announced the results of its investigation and supervision of the methanol (industrial alcohol) poisoning case at a wedding in Trat Cau village, Tien Phong commune, Thuong Tin district.
According to the report, at noon on July 20, 4 people with alcohol poisoning attended a wedding party at Ms. NTH's family in Trat Cau village, including drinking wine soaked with wild apples purchased by the host from Vinh Yen (Vinh Phuc province). That same evening, these 4 people and a man named D.VC (56 years old, living in Thanh Xuan district, Hanoi) continued to drink the remaining wine at the wedding party at the house of one of the group.
After that, the patients showed symptoms of fatigue, dizziness, headache... and were taken to the hospital by their families for treatment. As for Mr. D.VC, he died of unknown causes on the morning of July 23. The patient had no history of alcoholism and no chronic diseases.
The report said that the investigation and monitoring team collected 2 samples of hawthorn wine (including 1 sample from the family that held the wedding and 1 remaining sample of wine from the wedding that was brought home by a person in the group of patients) and sent them to the testing agency.
Test results showed that the methanol content in the two wine samples above was more than 40 times higher than the permissible threshold.
Specifically, the apple wine sample at Ms. NTH's house had a methanol content of 5.87 x 105. The apple wine sample at patient D.DT's house had a methanol content of 6.01 x 105. The remaining amount of wine at Ms. NTH's and Mr. D.DT's (about 7 liters) was destroyed according to regulations.
In addition, 4 poisoned patients had methanol levels in their blood ranging from 51 mg/dL to 188.8 mg/dL. Hawthorn wine was the cause of the poisoning.
Hanoi Food Safety Department recommends that people absolutely do not use floating alcohol, without labels, unknown origin, without licenses, and without technical guarantees sold on the market.
