The US has steadfastly denied any involvement or prior knowledge of the bombing that killed Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov and his assistant in Moscow.
According to RT, the commander of Russia's Radiological, Chemical and Biological Defense Forces and his assistant were killed in an explosion outside Kirillov's apartment early on December 17 (local time). Many media outlets reported that the assassination was carried out on orders from the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU).
“I can confirm that we had no prior knowledge of this activity,” Pentagon Press Secretary Major General Pat Ryder said at a press briefing following the incident. “We do not support or authorize these activities.”
The official added that he had seen reports of the explosion, but had no further information beyond what was in the media.
State Department spokesman Matthew Miller agreed. “I can say that the United States had no prior knowledge and was not involved in this incident,” he said.
Mr Miller said that General Kirillov had been involved in some of the actions, but Washington did not consider him a legitimate target.
The assassination came just hours after Kiev accused the general of involvement in the use of chemical weapons on the battlefield. Moscow has categorically denied the accusation. Although Kiev has not officially claimed responsibility for the attack, unnamed Ukrainian officials have said the bombing was a “special operation” by the Ukrainian Security Service.
For his part, Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council, condemned the attack. He stressed that attempts to intimidate the Russian Federation, prevent its attack or spread fear are doomed to failure and that Moscow will certainly impose sanctions, including against Ukraine's top military and political leadership.
Mr. Kirillov has been in command of the Russian military since 2017. The lieutenant general has been involved in investigating allegations that Ukraine used chemical weapons against the Russian military and has regularly provided reports on US laboratories in Ukraine, which he claims are involved in biological warfare research.
According to media reports and statements by some former officials, Kiev is conducting a widespread assassination program targeting individuals considered enemies of Ukraine. Russian investigators have accused the Ukrainian government of assassinating journalist Darya Dugina, military blogger Vladlen Tatarsky and other civilians.
