The appointment of General Charles Q. Brown Jr. as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff marks the first time that the two top Pentagon leadership positions have been held by people of color.
According to the New York Times, US President Joe Biden is expected to announce the appointment of General Charles Q. Brown Jr. - Chief of Staff of the US Air Force to the position of Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff to replace General Mark Milley.
If officially nominated and approved by the Senate, General Brown will succeed General Milley at the end of September, the New York Times reported.
Also according to the New York Times, General Brown will be the second black person to become Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff after General Colin L. Powell - who held this position under both US Presidents George HW Bush and Bill Clinton.

With the appointment of General Brown, for the first time in US history, the top two leadership positions at the Pentagon will be held by two people of color. Current US Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III is also a person of color.
The New York Times described this as a particular step forward for minority groups of color in the US military, while Pentagon leadership positions have traditionally been held by white people.
General Brown and Mr Austin are expected to advise Mr Biden on national security issues ranging from the war in Ukraine to the rise of China in the Asia-Pacific region. The two will represent the Pentagon at congressional hearings before Republican lawmakers.
By appointing another African American to a senior Pentagon post, Biden could create a new controversy among lawmakers on Capitol Hill. But he also scores points by breaking with the all-white Joint Chiefs of Staff under former President Donald Trump.
Currently, about 43% of the 1.3 million men and women serving in the US military are people of color. But for decades, most of the key positions in the Pentagon have been filled by white men.
Now that seems to be changing.
At a time of looming conflict with China, General Brown's experience in Asia is also a key factor, a US official said of Mr Biden's decision, reported earlier by Politico.
However, nothing is certain until Mr. Biden announces his choice, and it is unclear when that information will be released.
