Do Son fighting buffalo meat is sold at a price of around 2 million VND/kg, customers jostle to buy hoping for luck. Compared to previous years, the price of fighting buffalo meat this year is cheaper.
The 2024 Do Son Buffalo Fighting Festival has a total of 15 extremely dramatic matches, attracting a large number of spectators and tourists to watch.
Before participating in the festival, buffaloes must pass at least three health checks and safety assessments. Any buffalo that does not meet the criteria or shows signs of aggression will be disqualified and the buffalo owner must have a plan to replace it with another buffalo.
Coming to the Do Son buffalo fighting festival, besides the excitement of witnessing the dangerous attacks of the "buffaloes", people and tourists are also very excited, willing to spend millions to buy buffalo meat for luck.
According to tradition, all buffaloes participating in the festival will be butchered and sold to locals and tourists right after each round. The buffaloes that win first and second place will be sacrificed the following day.
The area where buffalo meat is sold is closely monitored to prevent the smuggling of buffalo meat from outside to be sold together with buffalo meat.
According to a survey, this year, the price of buffalo meat in the first rounds was sold for about 2 million VND/kg. However, later on, when there was a lot of buffalo meat, the price dropped to 1.2 - 1.5 million VND/kg, depending on the winning and losing positions. Meanwhile, the price of buffalo meat last year and many years before was sold for between 1.5 million and 3.5 million VND/kg.
Compared to buffalo meat on the market, the price of fighting buffalo meat is many times higher, but there are still many people jostling to buy it because many people believe that eating fighting buffalo meat will bring luck and prosperity.
Ms. Tran Thi Diem (residing in Do Son district, Hai Phong) said that this year she bought 10kg of fighting buffalo meat to give to relatives and friends for good luck. Fighting buffalo are carefully cared for, regularly trained and thoroughly inspected, so even though the price is higher than normal buffalo meat, she is still willing to spend nearly 20 million to buy it.
Ms. Pham Thi Hoa (from Thanh Hoa) shared: “Having traveled a long way to see buffalo fighting, I cannot return empty-handed. Although the price of buffalo meat is quite high, I still bought a few kilos for my family to enjoy and for good luck.”
