16 "buffaloes" participate in the fight at the traditional Do Son buffalo fighting festival in 2024.
This morning, September 21, at the central stadium of Do Son district (Hai Phong), the 2024 Do Son traditional buffalo fighting festival took place.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Chairman of Do Son District People's Committee Tran Khac Kien said that Do Son Buffalo Fighting Festival is a traditional folk festival associated with the long-standing custom of worshipping the water god and sacrificing animals, preserving spiritual cultural activities and community cultural identity. This demonstrates the martial spirit of the people of Do Son coastal area with the aspiration to conquer nature, master the sea, pray for favorable weather, national peace and prosperity, bountiful harvests, and a prosperous and happy life for the people.
After 35 years of restoration and development, the festival has been constantly improved, enhanced in scale and quality; at the same time, it still retains its folk elements and traditional cultural values, becoming a valuable cultural heritage, a unique and attractive tourism product of the country in general and of Do Son in particular. With that humanistic meaning, the Do Son buffalo fighting festival was honored to be included in the list of "National Intangible Cultural Heritage" by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in 2012.
This year, 16 "buffaloes" from 6 wards in the district participated in the festival. Each ward was registered for 2 buffaloes, and the 4 buffalo owners whose buffaloes won first, second and third prizes in 2023 were each registered for 1 more buffalo. Of the total 16 buffaloes, 3 "buffaloes" weighed about 1.2 tons, the remaining buffaloes weighed about 1 ton.
After the opening drum beat, the "buffaloes" entered the arena to the cheers and applause of tens of thousands of spectators present.
The dramatic matches and tricky moves created a lot of excitement and suspense for the audience.
