On June 30, Iraqi explosives experts neutralized six bombs believed to have been planted by Islamic State (IS) militants years ago in the historic al-Nuri mosque in the northern city of Mosul.

Speaking to reporters, Major Ahmed Saber of the Mosul police force stressed that these homemade bombs were complicated to install, but explosives experts successfully defused them without causing any casualties.

Major Saber added that the restoration work on the al-Nuri mosque carried out by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has been able to resume.

The operation had been halted a day earlier after a bomb was found on the southern wall of the church's prayer room.

IS bombed and detonated the al-Nuri mosque and its iconic leaning minaret on June 21, 2017.

UNESCO has been overseeing efforts to rebuild the cathedral and other heritage sites in Mosul after local forces, backed by a US-led international coalition, drove IS out of its last stronghold in Iraq.
