Iran has warned the US to stay away from conflict with Israel after attacking Israel with drones and missiles.
On April 14, Iran's UN Mission said: "Iran's military action is in response to the Israeli attack on our diplomatic facilities in Damascus."
"If the Israeli regime makes another mistake, Iran's response will be significantly more severe," Iran warned. "It is a conflict between Iran and Israel that the US MUST AVOID!"
Iran's Revolutionary Guards also warned the US that any action against Iran would be met with retaliation.
The Iranian delegation added that it hoped the punitive action over the attack on its diplomatic mission would not lead to further escalation and that "the matter can be considered closed".
But Iran's hopes that Israel would defend itself alone were quickly dashed. A Pentagon official confirmed that US forces were shooting down Iranian drones and Britain said it was ready to do the same.
Immediately after Iran attacked Israeli territory with missiles and UAVs on the evening of April 13, US National Security Council spokeswoman Adrienne Watson issued a statement.
The full statement reads: “Iran has launched an air attack against Israel. President Biden is receiving regular updates from his national security team and will meet with the US National Security Council this afternoon (April 13, US time).
His national security team will be in constant contact with Israeli officials as well as other partners and allies. The attack is likely to have been underway for hours.
President Biden's position is clear: Our support for Israel's security is ironclad. The United States will stand with the people of Israel and will help Israel defend itself against threats from Iran."
Trump says America is weak in the Middle East
Former US President Donald Trump has criticized President Biden after Iran attacked Israel, saying his November election opponent had shown "weakness" in the Middle East.
"Israel is under attack right now. It's because we showed tremendous weakness," Trump said at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania.
Mr Trump, who while in office ordered the killing of a top Iranian Revolutionary Guards leader in Baghdad and withdrew the US from the Iran nuclear deal, has repeatedly accused his Democratic rival of taking a soft approach to Tehran.
"The weakness we showed was unbelievable and it would not happen while I was in office," Mr. Trump declared.
