Immediately after hundreds of Iranian drones and ballistic missiles were launched into Israeli territory, US President Joe Biden held an emergency meeting with top security officials to review the situation, while pledging to protect Israel at all costs from Iranian attacks.

In a message posted on social network X, Mr. Biden emphasized: "I just had a meeting with my national security team to update on Iran's attacks on Israel. Our commitment to Israel's security against threats from Iran and its proxy forces is steadfast."

"In response to the increased Iranian threat and the growing risk of escalation in the Middle East, the UK government has been working with partners in the region in an effort to de-escalate and prevent further attacks," the UK Ministry of Defence said in a statement.

The UK Ministry of Defense's announcement also emphasized: "We have moved a number of additional Royal Air Force jets and aerial refueling aircraft to the area."

For its part, Germany warned that an Iranian drone and missile attack on Israel could "plunge an entire region into chaos," and called on Tehran to stop the attacks.

Earlier on the evening of April 13, the spokesman for the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari, confirmed in a press release that dozens of drones launched from Iran were heading towards Israel.

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps also confirmed that the country fired hundreds of drones into Israeli territory.

Later, Iran's state news agency IRNA quoted a well-informed source as saying that the country had begun launching its first ballistic missiles at targets "deep" inside "occupied territory and Israeli positions".

Tehran’s unprecedented attack of hundreds of drones and missiles on the evening of April 13 marked a major escalation in the long-running war between the two regional rivals. It was the first time Iran had directly attacked Israeli territory.

Tehran has repeatedly threatened to retaliate against Israel for an April 1 airstrike on the consular building within the Iranian Embassy compound in Damascus, Syria.
