On May 30, the process of registering candidates for the country's presidential election began on the morning of May 30 (local time) and will last for 5 days, until June 3. The Iranian presidential election is scheduled to take place on June 28.
Earlier, on May 26, Iranian Interior Minister Ahmad Vahidi issued a directive to begin the presidential election process. According to a notice on the ministry's website, all those who want to register as candidates must go to the Ministry of Interior headquarters in the capital Tehran.
According to Minister Vahidi, the background check process will last for 7 days, starting from June 4. After that, qualified candidates will have 14 days to conduct their election campaign.
In a May 26 announcement, Iran’s electoral authority outlined the requirements and qualifications that candidates must meet. Specifically, applicants must be of Iranian descent, hold Iranian citizenship, be between 40 and 75 years old, have a good record and reputation, and be committed to the principles of Iran and the country’s official religion, Islam. The Guardian Council will announce the list of qualified candidates on June 11.
Iran was originally scheduled to hold its 14th presidential election in 2025. However, the election was rescheduled for late June this year after President Ebrahim Raisi and his entourage were killed in a helicopter crash on May 19 in the mountainous region of East Azarbaijan province in northwestern Iran. On May 20, Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei appointed the country's First Vice President Mohammad Mokhber as interim president. According to the Iranian Constitution, interim President Mohammad Mokhber must hold a new presidential election within a maximum of 50 days.
