The United Nations Security Council will meet this week to discuss Pyongyang's recent failed launch of a spy satellite, a senior official at South Korea's permanent mission to the United Nations said on May 29, Yonhap reported.

The meeting is scheduled for May 31, the official said, following Pyongyang's failed attempt to launch a satellite-carrying rocket on May 27.

South Korea, a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, is expected to reaffirm its condemnation of the incident.

In a statement, a spokesman for the US mission to the United Nations confirmed that a meeting of the UN Security Council will take place on the morning of May 31, stressing that the council must address North Korea's "reckless and destabilizing" behavior.

Mr. Evans stated: "The United Nations Security Council has the responsibility to protect global peace and security, protect the global nuclear non-proliferation regime as well as protect its resolutions... The United States urges all members of the United Nations Security Council to take this responsibility seriously and be united in condemning the dangerous and illegal behavior of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea."
