Volunteers from the non-profit organization Katariba have done something very meaningful - building a safe play space for children.

In a classroom at a school in Suzu City, Ishikawa Prefecture - which was heavily affected by the earthquake - Katariba volunteers play chess, other games and read books with children.

Many children are still living in evacuation centers where there is no place to play, while others have parents who are busy rebuilding their homes and livelihoods after the earthquake, so it is important to ensure a safe place for children to play, said Yoshiki Itashiki, a member of Katariba.

She called the safe childcare support a blessing, noting that schools in Suzu are still only open for short periods of time while parents still have to work. Thanks to Katariba’s work, Itashiki decided to take her daughter from a temporary evacuation site in another city to live with her in Suzu.

More than 230 people were killed in the 7.6-magnitude quake, Japan's deadliest in eight years, according to the Ishikawa government. The disaster destroyed or damaged about 44,000 homes, and more than 40,000 others were without running water. More than 13,600 residents are living in evacuation centers, according to the Ishikawa government.
