On May 23, Indonesia's Mount Merapi - one of the world's most active volcanoes - erupted with lava flows more than 2km long from its crater.

The Merapi Volcano Observatory has released dramatic images of lava pouring from the volcano’s smoking crater. The Center for Geo-Disaster Technology Research and Development (BPPTKG), a government agency that monitors volcanic activity, said it had recorded dozens of small earthquakes linked to the eruption of Mount Merapi on May 23.
Agus Budi Santoso, head of the BPPTKG, said Merapi’s activity had increased slightly in the past few days, but that this was not unusual. Mr. Santoro said the lava flow remained within limits set by the authorities. In 2022, after assessing the risk of an eruption to nearby villages, authorities set a 7km danger zone around the volcano.
Mount Merapi, located just 28 km north of the provincial capital of Yogyakarta, is 2,963 m high and is one of Indonesia's most active volcanoes, currently on the second highest alert level. The last major eruption of Mount Merapi was in 2010, the most powerful since 1930, killing more than 300 people and forcing the evacuation of about 280,000 others.
Located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, Indonesia is the most volcanic country in the world.
