On October 17, Mount Ibu in Indonesia's North Maluku province erupted, prompting local authorities to warn residents and tourists to stay away from the dangerous area.
According to the Ibu Volcano Observatory, the volcano erupted at 12:42 p.m. on October 17 (local time), sending hot ash as far as 600 meters from the crater. Ahmad Basuki, who works at the observatory, said the Ibu eruption created a thick column of ash. He advised people to cover their noses and mouths and wear protective eyewear when outdoors.
Mount Ibu is 1,377 metres above sea level. Its activity is currently at the second most dangerous level on Indonesia's four-level alert scale.
