Hanoi opens C-shaped overpass after 1 year of delay

At 7:00 a.m. on June 30, Hanoi opened the C-shaped overpass at the Chua Boc - Pham Ngoc Thach intersection (Dong Da). The opening of the project after nearly two years of construction is expected to resolve the serious traffic congestion here.

Leaders of Hanoi People's Committee cut the ribbon to inaugurate the C-shaped overpass project.

On the morning of June 30, the Hanoi People's Committee held a ceremony to open the C-shaped overpass at the Chua Boc - Pham Ngoc Thach intersection. Standing Deputy Secretary of the Hanoi Party Committee Nguyen Thi Tuyen attended and cut the ribbon to open the traffic.

Speaking at the ceremony, Vice Chairman of Hanoi People's Committee Duong Duc Tuan assessed the C-shaped overpass at the Chua Boc - Pham Ngoc Thach intersection (an important traffic intersection of Dong Da district) as a key traffic project of the city in the period of 2021-2026.

According to the design, Hanoi will build a Y-shaped overpass, however, because the first phase has not yet cleared the land on Ton That Tung Street, the Hanoi People's Committee decided to build the C-shaped overpass first.

In the coming time, when Ton That Tung Street is cleared according to the plan, Hanoi will add an overpass on this street, connecting with the C-shaped overpass that has just been opened to traffic to create a complete Y-shaped overpass according to the plan.

"The Y-shaped overpass project, once completed, will solve the serious traffic congestion at the Chua Boc - Ton That Tung - Pham Ngoc Thach - Dong Tac intersection, where many schools, shopping centers, and service buildings are concentrated with high density and bustling in the city," said Mr. Tuan.

Overpass with maximum load of 30 tons

The C-shaped overpass is more than 300m long, 9m wide, with an investment capital of 150 billion VND from the Hanoi city budget.

According to plan, the project was completed and put into operation in June 2022. However, due to the impact of the Covid-19 epidemic and difficulties in moving underground works, the project was delayed.

The overpass is designed with a C-shaped steel structure from Chua Boc to Pham Ngoc Thach, organizing two-way traffic.

According to the traffic organization plan through the overpass area (right after the opening ceremony), at the Luong Dinh Cua - Pham Ngoc Thach intersection, the authorities prohibit vehicles from turning around on Pham Ngoc Thach Street (in the direction from the overpass to Luong Dinh Cua intersection). Vehicles on Pham Ngoc Thach Street (in the direction from Dao Duy Anh to Chua Boc) are prohibited from turning left onto Luong Dinh Cua Street.

The project passes through many bustling commercial centers in Dong Da district.
