The achievement of 4 gold medals at SEA Games 32 helped Nguyen Thi Oanh set a Vietnamese record.
Nguyen Thi Oanh became the first Vietnamese athlete in history to win four gold medals at a single SEA Games. The athlete born in 1995 won the 1,500m, 5,000m, 3,000m steeplechase and 10,000m events. The 10,000m event was her first time participating.
With the gold medal in the 10,000m race tonight (May 12), Nguyen Thi Oanh reached the milestone of 12 gold medals in all SEA Games, equaling the achievement of Nguyen Thi Huyen. About an hour later, Nguyen Thi Huyen joined the team that won the gold medal in the 4x400m event to set a new milestone.
However, Nguyen Thi Oanh's achievements are still better than her seniors. While Nguyen Thi Huyen also participated in the relay event, all 12 gold medals of Nguyen Thi Oanh are individual achievements. No other Vietnamese athlete has won 12 gold medals in individual events in SEA Games athletics.
In all the competitions at the 32nd SEA Games, Nguyen Thi Oanh outperformed her opponents. Notably, she won two gold medals in the 1,500m and 3,000m events only about 30 minutes apart. The athlete's break between the two events was only about 15 minutes, just enough time to change clothes, drink water and complete the competition procedures.
Nguyen Thi Oanh won the 4th gold medal at SEA Games 32
In the 10,000m event, Nguyen Thi Oanh competed for the first time but won the gold medal. She left her teammate - the defending champion - Pham Thi Hong Le behind by 10 seconds.
“After completing the final task, I was very happy to have released all the thoughts, worries and pressures of the past days. And I feel truly grateful and happy for having done that,” Nguyen Thi Oanh shared.
Nguyen Thi Oanh and the Vietnamese athletics team will return home tomorrow, May 13. The Vietnamese athletics team won 12 gold medals at the 32nd SEA Games.
