Fansipan appears frosty

At around 3am on December 23, a thin layer of ice (also known as frost) covered the wooden floor where the Fansipan symbol was located when the on-site temperature measuring device recorded -1 degree Celsius. This phenomenon lasted for about 4 hours, then the ice melted when the weather was sunny.

Frost usually forms when the air temperature is below 4 degrees Celsius, while the surface of objects and plants is close to 0 degrees Celsius. Water vapor condenses into a solid, porous, white, salt-like substance, so it is called hoarfrost.

Frost appears because the night temperature at the top of Fansipan drops below 0 degrees, while it is sunny during the day, leading to evaporation and condensation.

This morning, 16 out of 25 northern provinces and cities recorded temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius. Of which, the lowest temperature recorded in Trung Khanh (Cao Bang) was over 4 degrees Celsius. The areas of Sin Ho (Lai Chau), Ngan Son (Bac Kan), Dinh Lap and Mau Son (Lang Son) were around 5 degrees Celsius.

Many areas also recorded quite low temperatures, from 7 to 9 degrees Celsius, such as Pha Din, Tuan Giao (Dien Bien), Yen Chau and Co Noi (Son La), Lac Son (Hoa Binh), Dinh Hoa (Thai Nguyen), Minh Dai (Phu Tho), Quang Ha (Quang Ninh), Son Dong (Bac Giang) and Cuc Phuong (Ninh Binh).

Meanwhile in Hanoi, temperatures ranged from over 10 degrees Celsius in Ba Vi to 14 degrees Celsius in Lang, 11 degrees Celsius in Ha Dong, 12 degrees Celsius in Son Tay and 13 degrees Celsius in Hoai Duc.

The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting said the weather in the North this week is dominated by a weakening cold front. On December 24-25, the weather will be cloudy, with fog in the early morning and light sunshine during the day. On December 26-28, there will be light rain at night and in the morning.

The meteorological agency forecasts that in the next month, the average temperature across the country will be approximately the average of many years. Cold air tends to be active, with the possibility of many days of severe cold, concentrated in January 2025.
