On January 16, European Union (EU) member countries added Hamas political leader Yahia Sinouar to the sanctions list.
The move was in response to Hamas' attacks on Israeli territory on October 7, 2023. Mr. Sinouar is accused of planning the attacks.
Under the new sanctions, Mr. Sinouar will have his assets frozen in 27 EU member states, in addition, EU organizations and citizens are prohibited from conducting any transactions with Mr. Sinouar.
Last December, the EU also placed two Hamas military commanders, Mohammed Deif and Marwan Issa, on its sanctions list.
According to Israeli figures, the October 7 attack was the worst in Israel’s history, killing about 1,140 people, most of them civilians. After that, about 250 Israeli hostages were kidnapped to Gaza, of whom 132 have not yet been released.
Israel has been conducting an offensive against Hamas for more than 100 days. The fighting between the two sides has killed more than 24,280 Palestinian civilians.
