Billionaire Elon Musk plans to launch a video app to compete with YouTube, first working on smart TVs from Amazon and Samsung,
On March 8, an anonymous source revealed to Fortune that: "The app could be announced next week. Elon Musk is determined to compete with YouTube, his goal is to encourage users to watch long videos on the big screen."
Sources say Musk wants to attract advertisers and KOLs to the X platform, as well as plans to compete with livestreaming platform Twitch, encrypted messaging app Signal and forum Reddit.
The news of the TV app comes as X looks to take a bigger role in the streaming video market. The social network declared itself a “video-first platform” in January and introduced a feature similar to TikTok’s scrolling.
Elon Musk and X have not commented on the information.
This isn’t the first time X has tried to reach TV customers. The social network has twice released apps for TVs, first in 2010 on the Google TV platform and then on Samsung TV’s Smart Hub.
Elon Musk’s ambitions seem to be focused on social media stars, influencers, and game streamers. The American billionaire has encouraged content creators to move their videos to X, claiming they will benefit from the platform’s advertising revenue.
