The unfortunate defeat against Iraq caused the Vietnamese team to lose the number 1 position in Southeast Asia to rival Thailand.
The Vietnamese team officially ended their journey at the 2023 Asian Cup with a 2-3 loss to Iraq in the final round of Group D.
The defeat in the last minute was truly regrettable as the "Golden Star Warriors" fought tirelessly for more than 100 minutes of brave play at Jassim Bin Hamad.
Notably, during the second half, the Vietnamese team had to play with only 10 players after Khuat Van Khang was sent off at the end of the first half.
Closing the 2023 Asian Cup, Coach Philippe Troussier's team said goodbye to the tournament without gaining any points after losing all 3 matches, respectively against Japan (2-4), Indonesia (0-1) and Iraq (2-3).
This result caused the Vietnamese team to fall miserably in the FIFA rankings.
In total, the Vietnamese team was deducted a total of more than 40 points, leaving 1,194 points and falling to 105th place on the FIFA rankings.
World ranking 105 is the lowest ranking of the Vietnam National Team in more than 5 years, since FIFA ranking 100 in April 2018.
In contrast to the Vietnamese team, the Thai team has made strong progress thanks to impressive results at the 2023 Asian Cup. Thailand won against Kyrgyzstan and drew with the higher-rated team, Oman.
With this impressive achievement, the Golden Temple team was awarded 22.2 points, rising 11 places to climb to 102nd place on the FIFA rankings.
This result caused the Vietnamese team to lose the top position in Southeast Asia to Thailand after 77 months (6 years and 5 months).
Not only did they regain the No. 1 position in Southeast Asia, the Thai team also won the right to enter the round of 16 to continue their journey at the 2023 Asian Cup Finals.
Thailand will also likely be the only team in the region to make it past the group stage in the regional arena.
