The book, written by authors Dang Viet Cuong, Khuc Kim Tinh, Tang Ba Hoanh, Hoang Lam, Nguyen Huy Thiem, Nguyen Thi Cuoi, Nguyen Tien Quang based on research and fieldwork, has affirmed that festivals in Hai Duong are not only attractive for their jubilation and excitement but also for their solemn and purely Vietnamese rituals passed down from generation to generation such as ceremonies, processions, entertainment, singing, etc. Hai Duong's folk festivals are likened by the authors to an underground stream that flows through time, nurturing the spiritual life of the people of the East.
The book shows readers that festivals in Hai Duong have typical features and values honoring ancestors who have contributed to building the country, fighting foreign invaders, passing on crafts, fighting natural disasters, establishing villages, etc. With the philosophy of drinking water and remembering its source, festivals are organized enthusiastically by the local community, reenacting stories and achievements, serving as a bridge between the past and the present, helping the younger generation understand the contributions of their ancestors, and fostering pride in the traditions of their homeland and country. In particular, festivals have been closely associated with villages, places, and lands as an indispensable element in community life.
The book introduces 47 typical festivals in the area, of which 39 festivals take place in spring and 8 festivals take place in autumn. The editorial board introduces the festivals in chronological order, from the beginning of January to the end of the lunar year. Each festival in the book is introduced in detail by the authors. Readers can see the procession of each ritual, the procession, and the unique folk cultural values in each festival. The culinary offerings are served to the saints and visitors in many unique forms. In particular, the Con Son - Kiep Bac spring and autumn festivals have been restored with unique cultural values, becoming a key regional tourism product of the country.
The book "Folk Festivals of Hai Duong Province" will help readers understand more thoroughly about an ancient land of the East, Hai Duong today. Grassroots cultural managers will have more knowledge in consulting and organizing annual traditional festivals.
