Naming the 'sales kings' of 9 popular car brands in Vietnam in 2024

HQ (according to Vietnamnet) January 17, 2025 08:24

The following 'golden goose' car models have both new and old names, but the common point is that they are all strategic products, even contributing to the sales of an entire car company in 2024.

According to the report of the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association (VAMA), in the whole year of 2024, the sales of VAMA members reached 340,142 vehicles, an increase of 12.6% compared to 2023. If we add the separate announced sales of Hyundai Thanh Cong Automobile Joint Venture (TC Motor) and VinFast, the Vietnamese automobile market consumed 494,310 vehicles in 2024, an increase of 22% compared to 2023.

2024 also marked the first time that Vietnamese car brand VinFast surpassed foreign car brands to rise to the No. 1 position with 87,000 units sold, accounting for about 17.6% of total car sales in the year; Hyundai ranked second with 67,168 units, accounting for about 13.6% of the market share. Japanese car company Toyota was pushed down to third place with 66,676 units sold in the year (excluding the Lexus brand), accounting for 13.5% of the market share.

These are 3 big car brands with product lines covering almost all segments, so it is understandable that they have large sales and occupy a large "piece of the cake". However, not all car companies have a full range of products like the 3 car companies mentioned above. Many brands, even with only a few models introduced, still bring in impressive sales that competitors dream of.

Below are the top 9 names of popular car brands in Vietnam in 2024:

VinFast VF 5: 32,000 units

VinFast VF5.jpg

In 2024, VinFast VF 5 had "huge" sales of up to 32,000 units sold to the market, accounting for about 36.8% of VinFast's sales. VinFast's small electric car model was only launched and delivered to customers from the end of April 2023, but almost immediately created attraction and rose to become the best-selling car model on the market in 2024.

Currently, VinFast is distributing VF 5 with 1 Plus version with a selling price of 480 million (battery rental package) and 540 million (battery purchase). VF 5 is equipped with a 134 horsepower electric motor and a lithium battery with an available capacity of 37.23 kWh. The travel distance of a full charge is more than 300km according to WLTP inspection standards.

Mitsubishi Xpander: 19,498 units

If only counting vehicles using internal combustion engines, Mitsubishi Xpander was still the best-selling model in the entire market in 2024 with 19,498 units. This number decreased slightly by 1.2% compared to 2023 but still accounted for 47.3% of the total sales of the Mitsubishi brand in Vietnam.

Mitsubishi Xpander has been upgraded since June 2022 with 3 versions, priced from 560-658 million VND. In addition, the Xpander Cross version launched in early 2023 is priced at 698 million VND. All cars use a 1.5L engine with a CVT automatic transmission or a 5-speed manual transmission 5MT.

Ford Ranger: 17,508 units

The "Pickup King" finished 2024 with 17,508 units, an increase of 8.8% compared to 2023. Ranger alone "carried" 41.5% of the entire American car company's sales in 2024 and still proved to have no rivals in the pickup truck segment in Vietnam.

Ford Ranger has 6 versions with prices ranging from 659 million to 1.299 billion VND. Ranger versions have 2 engine options: 2.2L Turbo diesel for low versions and 2.0L Bi-Turbo diesel engine for imported versions Wildtrak, Stormtrak and Raptor.

Mazda CX-5 sold 14,781 units in 2024, although sales decreased by about 12.1% compared to 2023, Mazda CX-5 still accounted for 45.3% of total THACO-Mazda vehicles sold. Therefore, it is not too much to say that Mazda CX-5 is the model that "carries" sales for the entire Japanese car company in Vietnam last year.

The new current generation Mazda CX-5 will be upgraded by THACO in early 2024, assembled domestically with 3 versions, equipped with a 2.0L Skyactiv-G engine, priced from 749-829 million VND (excluding other options).

Toyota Vios: 14,210 units

Vios is still Toyota's "golden goose" model with sales of 14,210 units, surpassing the "newcomer" Yaris Cross to become the best-selling model of the Toyota brand in 2024. Vios's sales increased by 5.1% compared to 2023 and is still the best-selling sedan model in the market.

The mid-life upgrade (facelift) Toyota Vios launched in the Vietnamese market in May 2023 with three versions, prices ranging from 458-545 million VND. All versions use a 1.5L gasoline engine, combined with a 5-speed manual transmission or CVT automatic transmission.

Hyundai Accent: 13,538 units

Hyundai is a brand that is considered to be "even-handed" when it has many car models with high sales and often leads in the segments it participates in. In 2024, the best-selling car model Accent achieved total sales of 13,538 units, down 22.4% compared to 2023 but still accounted for 20.2% of Hyundai Thanh Cong's total sales, much higher than the second-ranked model Creta with 8,640 units.

The new generation Hyundai Accent 2024 model was launched at the end of May this year with 4 versions, equipped with a 1.5L Smartstream engine. Of which, the manual version costs 439 million VND, the three automatic versions cost from 489-569 million VND.

Honda City: 10,500 units

With total sales of 10,500 units, a slight increase of 6.1% compared to last year, Honda City continued to be Honda Vietnam's best-selling model last year. The above sales accounted for 37.1% of Honda Vietnam's total sales in 2024.

The current generation Honda City was launched in 2021, equipped with a 1.5L engine with a CVT gearbox and standard ADAS features on all 3 versions (G, L and RS). Car prices range from 499-569 million VND.

KIA Sonet: 7,313 units

KIA Sonet sold 7,313 units in 2024, accounting for 21.2% of KIA's vehicle sales in Vietnam and is still the best-selling model of the Korean car brand. However, this number decreased sharply by 35.6% compared to 2023 (11,366 units).

KIA Sonet was launched by THACO KIA in late 2021 and renewed in June 2024. KIA Sonet is assembled domestically by THACO-KIA with 3 versions, prices ranging from 499-609 million VND.

Suzuki XL7: 3,154 units

The XL7 MPV SUV hybrid model is still the brightest name in Suzuki's somewhat sluggish product line in Vietnam, accounting for 30.7% of the Japanese brand's vehicle sales, including commercial vehicles. In 2024, 3,154 XL7s were sold on the market, an increase of 24.9% compared to 2023, of which 1,315 were the XL7 Hybrid version.

In fact, the Suzuki XL7 Hybrid is an upgraded version of the previous XL7 with the biggest highlight being the engine block supported by an integrated starter generator (ISG) and a small capacity lithium-ion battery pack. This engine produces 103 horsepower, combined with a 4-speed automatic transmission. The Suzuki XL7 Hybrid is still imported from Indonesia with the same selling price as the previous pure gasoline XL7 at 599.9 million VND.
