A 14-year-old boy went online to look up instructions and bought explosives to make firecrackers to burn on New Year's Eve, causing his left hand to be crushed.
On January 29, Tien Giang General Hospital said it was treating a 14-year-old boy living in Hau My Trinh Commune, Cai Be District. According to Dr. Nguyen Benh Kang, Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology, the patient suffered severe injuries to his left hand, including: crushed soft tissue at the tips of fingers 2, 3, and 4; fracture and dislocation of the thumb. There were also burns and bleeding on the face and abdomen.
Although his health is stable and he can be discharged in the next few days, the after-effects can affect his ability to grasp and make fine movements of his hands.
The hospital warns of the dangers of firecrackers, especially homemade ones, which can be disabling or life-threatening. Families should increase supervision of their children and avoid allowing them to access illegal online sites that sell firecrackers.
