At 9:35 a.m. on June 28, more than 21,700 candidates in Hai Duong completed the literature exam - the first subject of the 2023 high school graduation exam. This is the only essay subject of this year's exam.

Within reach

According to the Hai Duong Newspaper reporters at some testing locations in Hai Duong City and Kim Thanh and Gia Loc districts, most candidates left the testing room in an excited mood. Many candidates said that the test was within their ability and close to the program they had studied. The test structure was familiar, and the social discussion questions were also age-appropriate. Those with good academic ability and good analytical thinking and connection to reality will easily get 7 points.

Leaving the Gia Loc II High School exam site the earliest, with a radiant face, candidate Nguyen Dinh Kien in Gia Loc town said: “The test was not as difficult as I thought, however, there was still a clear differentiation. The most difficult question was question 1 of the writing section, which is about balancing emotions in the reading comprehension section, requiring practical life skills to write well. I think those who study well will get 7 points or more, those who study well will get higher scores. I am satisfied with my test and predict that I will get 7 points or more.”

Candidates in Gia Loc are excited because they did the test.

Tran Kim Thu, who took the exam at Kim Thanh High School, said that this year's exam was not too difficult and within her ability. These were familiar lessons that she had been taught, especially the work "The Picked-Up Wife" which she had practiced a lot and analyzed carefully. "I was not confused by this exam. Question 4 of Part I is an easy-to-understand, meaningful, and emotional connection. I used my skills well to complete the exam. I think I will get 7 points. Other students can easily get 7 points on this exam, but to get 8 points or more, you need practical knowledge and high reasoning skills," Thu said.

Many students said they had not studied the lesson "The Picked-up Wife" carefully, so they were a bit surprised when reading the questions. Nguyen Thi Minh, a student at Hai Duong College of Culture and Tourism, did not expect the test to be about the work "The Picked-up Wife". "I found the reading comprehension part a bit difficult this year because I have never practiced this type of question. With the work "The Picked-up Wife", I have never analyzed the author's perspective on life, so it was a bit difficult. This year's test was more difficult than last year's, but I am still confident that I will get 7 points," Minh said.

Clear classification

Candidates in Hai Duong city discuss exam questions

Similar to last year, this year's literature exam has 2 parts. Part I is reading comprehension (3 points), including 4 questions requiring candidates to identify the poetic form through an excerpt from the work Passing Through the Storm by author Anh Ngoc; point out the words and images describing the summer storm; state the effect of the comparative rhetorical device; draw lessons for their own life from the author's reflections through the verse. Part II is writing (7 points), including 2 questions requiring candidates to write a 200-word paragraph through the excerpt expressing their thoughts on the necessity of knowing how to balance emotions in life. Notably, question 2 (5 points) about the short story The Picked-Up Wife by author Kim Lan requires candidates to analyze the excerpt and the writer's perspective on life expressed in the excerpt.

Some teachers commented that the test closely followed the curriculum, practice and sample test structure of the Ministry of Education and Training. In the reading comprehension section, students can easily get points in questions 1 and 2. Questions 3 and 4 are not too difficult and the content is not new, as long as the candidates have a firm grasp of basic knowledge and have the mindset, they can get points. The work "The Picked-up Wife" is not beyond the expectations of teachers and students. Many students can get 7 points or more.

The weather is favorable for candidates to take the literature exam.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Ngoan, a literature teacher at Phuc Thanh High School (Kinh Mon) said that the exam was suitable for the candidates, the types of questions were not surprising to the candidates because they had been practiced a lot. The exam had a clear classification from the level of reading comprehension to literary appreciation and the candidates' sophistication. In the reading comprehension section, students can easily achieve maximum scores. The argumentative writing section is related to familiar issues, close to students in life, and can be easily answered. The content of the classification lies in the requirement of connection between oneself and real life. The clearest differentiation is question 2 of the writing section, at the end of the work, students must study in depth to be able to fully analyze the meaning of the excerpt.

“With this test, the score range will be around 7-7.5 points. To get a score of 8 or higher, students must be good, excellent, have good literary appreciation and literary processing skills to be able to achieve it,” said Ms. Ngoan.

Sharing the same view, Ms. Nguyen Thi Hanh, a literature teacher at Dong Gia High School (Kim Thanh) said that this year's exam was suitable for students. Question 2 of Part II clearly classifies students. This is a good passage in the work "The Beggar's Wife". If only generalizing, many students may only see poverty, but the greatest meaning of the passage is to express the writer Kim Lan's new ideas about life. The passage not only shows the hunger and suffering of the people, but above all, the desire for a happy life, the revolutionary path, thereby expressing a strong belief in the future, in the revolution.

Young volunteers enthusiastically cheer for candidates in Kim Thanh

In general, most candidates felt comfortable with the first exam. This was the motivation that helped candidates comfortably enter the math exam in the afternoon of the same day.

This morning, although their children had already entered the exam room, many parents still lingered in front of the exam site, persistently watching their children. Like many parents waiting for their children outside the exam site, Ms. Hoang Thi Phuong in Tu Minh Ward (Hai Duong City) was quite nervous because her child was not good at literature. Ms. Phuong said: "Luckily, my child had reviewed closely the content of the literature test this morning."

The weather this morning is cool and favorable for both candidates and their parents as well as those working to organize the exam. The police, medical staff, security guards, youth volunteers... continue to perform their duties enthusiastically and responsibly, ensuring traffic safety and security and order inside and outside the exam site.

According to a quick report from the Department of Education and Training, 21,763 candidates registered to take the literature exam. 60 candidates were absent. No candidates or staff violated exam regulations.
