Striker Nguyen Cong Phuong will leave Yokohama FC and move to a team outside Japan's borders.
Cong Phuong said that after September 15, he will part ways with Yokohama FC after nearly 2 years of association. The decision is somewhat surprising as the two sides have just renewed their contract in early 2024.
"We would like to announce that striker Nguyen Cong Phuong will leave the team to complete the transfer procedure to a foreign team. We will have further announcements when the official decision is made," Yokohama FC announced on its homepage. Cong Phuong's destination has not yet been determined, and the possibility of him returning to Vietnam and playing in the First Division is not ruled out.
Moving to Yokohama FC was not a very good decision for Nguyen Cong Phuong. In the past 2 years, he rarely played for the Japanese team. Cong Phuong only had one starting match for Yokohama FC in 20 months. In May, Cong Phuong played 17 minutes in Yokohama FC's 1-3 loss to Nagoya Grampus in the Japanese National Cup.
In the 2023 season, Cong Phuong played less than 1 minute in the J.League Cup and completely disappeared from the J.League as well as the Emperor's Cup. Yokohama FC was relegated but the situation was not much better for the Vietnamese player.
On the morning of September 4, Nguyen Cong Phuong posted a rare photo on his personal page with a status mentioning his home team Yokohama FC. The reality is that everyone remembers Cong Phuong at his peak, not the Cong Phuong who is "missing" in Japan.
Mr. Kim Sang-sik and his colleagues are interested in Nguyen Cong Phuong but still leave this player out. Cong Phuong rarely plays at Yokohama FC. Therefore, the coaching staff cannot find good enough data to evaluate the performance of the star from Nghe An. He must try harder in the future.
Obviously, Cong Phuong left Yokohama FC with the desire to save his career. At the age of 29, he still has enough time and health to shine on the field. If he can play more often, the door to the Vietnamese national team will always be open for the star from Nghe An.
