According to Yonhap news agency, on March 8, the prosecution announced that it had ordered the release of impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol from detention after the court approved his request to cancel the arrest warrant.

The special investigation team said it had notified the Seoul Detention Center in Uiwang, south of the capital, of Yoon Suk Yeol's release.

Mr. Yoon will be released after 52 days of being detained by investigators and brought here since January 15, on charges of inciting rebellion through the declaration of martial law on December 3, 2024.

Also on March 8, the ruling People's Power Party (PPP) demanded that the prosecution immediately release President Yoon Suk Yeol following the court's decision to cancel his arrest warrant.

Previously, the Seoul Central District Court decided on March 7 to cancel the arrest warrant for President Yoon.

According to the Criminal Procedure Act of Korea, when there is no longer a reason for detention or the reason for detention has expired, the court must, upon request from the defendant or prosecutor, cancel the detention order.

President Yoon is still suspended from office due to his impeachment by the Constitutional Court, so he will not be able to return to work at the Presidential Office, but is expected to return to his private residence.
