Should you change your car's oil yourself or take it to a service center?
Make sure you have the right knowledge before attempting to change your car's oil yourself.
Changing car oil is one of the simple tasks in a series of tasks related to car maintenance. Because you can refer to the instruction manual, or you can find videos on how to change oil on Youtube and you can follow.
However, experts recommend that users should not try to change the engine oil themselves when they do not know exactly what they need to do. Because that will have consequences for the vehicle.
Mr. Hoang Van Manh, an auto repairman in Nam Tu Liem district (Hanoi) said:“Changing engine oil is simple, but if the owner does it incorrectly, it can damage surrounding parts. You can even damage internal engine components, which can cost you many times more.”.
In addition, Mr. Manh also pointed out that if not thoroughly researched, car owners may replace the wrong type of oil, not tighten the drain plug according to specifications, not tighten the oil filter, or add too much or too little oil, which will also affect the engine.
“The amount of money you save is actually not significant. Changing the oil yourself can take hours or even a whole day. You simply drain the old oil and pour in the new oil, without checking the surrounding details such as checking under the hood for other fluids, belts, hoses, and tires.”, Mr. Manh analyzed further.
If there is a problem with those parts, you will not be able to detect it because you are not a professional mechanic. Not to mention, changing the engine oil yourself also leads to the risk of environmental pollution if excess oil is discharged directly into the environment.
Some of the tools needed to perform an oil change are also expensive and costly. To change your car’s oil yourself, you’ll need at least a wrench, a funnel, a drain pan, and an oil filter wrench. You’ll also need a jack and a jack stand, as well as plenty of space.
Therefore, Mr. Manh recommends that if you do not have the knowledge and experience or the necessary tools, it is best to give your car to a professional mechanic to change the oil and check the related details.
