According to RT TV channel, in a statement on May 6 while on a visit to France, Chinese President Xi Jinping expressed his support for an international Ukraine peace conference if it was recognized by Moscow and Kiev and had equal participation from all sides.

Earlier, Switzerland announced that it had invited more than 160 countries to a conference to find a solution to the Ukraine conflict at the request of President Volodymyr Zelensky. The conference is scheduled to be held on June 15-16 at the Burgenstock resort. Delegations will come from G7, G20, BRICS, and EU member states.

During a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris on May 6, Chinese President Xi Jinping stressed that Beijing is playing a “positive role” in trying to find a peaceful solution.

Xi Jinping noted the need for equal participation of all parties and fair discussion of all peace plans.

China has long urged peace talks between Ukraine and Russia, and in February 2023 it presented a 12-point peace plan to end the fighting after a year of conflict. The initiative includes calls for ending war and hostilities, resuming peace talks, abandoning the “Cold War mentality” and respecting the sovereignty of all nations.

For its part, Moscow called the Swiss-proposed conference “nonsense” and said it would not participate, even if invited.

In contrast to Beijing’s proposal to end the fighting, Kiev’s 10-point peace formula – first put forward by President Zelensky in the fall of 2022 – calls for the complete and unconditional withdrawal of Russian forces from all Ukrainian territories, with Moscow paying reparations. Russia has rejected these proposals as unrealistic and a sign that Kiev is not ready to seek a diplomatic solution to the conflict.
