The 2024 Asian Taekwondo Championship took place today (May 14) at Tien Son Sports Palace (Da Nang), with the participation of more than 1,000 officials, coaches and athletes from 45 countries and territories.

On the first day of competition, athletes competed in standard and creative individual performance events in each age group.

Notably, in the U30 women's individual standard boxing event, athlete Le Tran Kim Uyen lost her chance to win a medal when she lost to Kuo Yen Yu (Taiwan) in the quarterfinals because the referee made a mistake.

In her test, Kim Uyen received a total score of 7,199 from 5 judges. Meanwhile, Kuo Yen Yu received a total score of 8,066.

It is worth mentioning that Kim Uyen's technical score was unexpectedly low from 2/5 referees with 1.8 and 1.9 points. Because according to the coaches, the worst technical score should be 3.0 and cannot be so unusually low. Meanwhile, the remaining 3 referees gave scores of 3.3, 3.0 and 3.3.

"With that score, Kim Uyen must have made 3 or more technical mistakes (movements). This is something that martial artists will not make. So when the 2 referees gave 1.8 and 1.9 on technical points, the other teams also shook their heads in reaction," coach Nguyen Bich Thuy shared.

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Huy - head coach of the Vietnamese taekwondo team - said that immediately after the incident, the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) referee team met with the tournament's head referee to request a report and convened a referee team to find the reason. After that, WTF convened a meeting with all the referees because of the serious mistake.

"The referees had to stop the matches, meet for more than half an hour and stop the two referees who made the wrong decisions. The rule is that when a mistake occurs, they will not allow any more decisions. But the result was a judgment error, so nothing could be changed. Kim Uyen still lost," said Mr. Huy.

At the end of the competition on the morning of May 14, Vietnamese taekwondo won 3 bronze medals thanks to Nguyen Thien Phung (U40 men's individual boxing), Lien Thi Tuyet Mai (U40 women's individual boxing) and Pham Quoc Viet (U30 men's individual boxing).
