At 3:00 p.m. local time (8:00 p.m. Hanoi time) on June 22, the Czech team will enter the second match in Group F of the EURO 2024 finals against the Georgian team.
After a 1-2 defeat to Portugal in their opening match, the Czech Republic needed a win to boost their morale and keep their hopes alive of advancing. The players from the “Land of Crystal” showed great determination in their pre-match speeches.
Czech media said the match at the Volksparkstadion (Hamburg, Germany) would be very important for both the Czech Republic and Georgia - the team also lost 1-3 to Turkey in the first match. The Czech team has participated in all EURO finals since independence in 1993, while this is the first time Georgia has qualified. Coach Willy Sagnol's team is also the lowest ranked team when Georgia is only ranked 74th in the FIFA rankings.
Speaking before the match, Czech defender Tomas Holes said: "Of course, the match against Portugal gave us a lot and we are ready. The match against Georgia will be very important. If we win, we will be closer to passing the group stage."
Czech coach Ivan Hasek said: “Georgia is a quality team, with players of incredible maturity. We have to be 100% focused and ready for this match.”
On the Georgian side, striker Georges Mikautadze, who plays in Türkiye, said: “We all realise the importance of this match. We didn’t get any points in the opening match so we have to do our best to win and keep our hopes of advancing alive.”
After the match against Portugal on June 18, Czech coach Ivan Hasek hinted at the possibility of adjusting the starting lineup for the next match. One notable face who could start against Georgia is attacking midfielder Antonin Barak. In the opening match, Barak came on as a substitute in the 79th minute. Captain Tomas Soucek has a knee problem, but according to coach Hasek, the player is still ready for the match.
Speaking ahead of the match, Barak believes the Czech team will win against Georgia with an attacking style of play. The 29-year-old midfielder said: “I hope we will win and please our fans with an attacking style of play. Besides, we will also show efficiency in defense.”
This is the Czech Republic's third international match in Hamburg in nearly 20 years. The previous two matches were both sad memories when the Czech Republic lost 0-2 to Italy in the 2006 World Cup finals and lost 0-3 to Germany in the 2016 World Cup qualifiers.
