An 11-year-old boy was left disabled due to heat stroke after being forced to stand outside for three hours as punishment by his teacher.
The boy's mother, Ms AD Mogahana Selvi (35 years old) said that Ampang Hospital in Selangor state, based on the boy's health condition, classified him as a disabled person.
The New Straits Times reported that the teacher punished the boy by making him stand outside on the school grounds between 10am and 12:50pm on April 30. According to Mogahana, the teacher punished her son because he threw a water bottle at a classmate.
Ms Mogahana said that when he returned home, his eyes were very red and he said he was not feeling well. His family then took him to the hospital, where he collapsed in the Emergency Department.
The hospital diagnosed the boy with nerve damage due to heatstroke. Speaking to the media at a press conference on May 29, Ms. Mogahana expressed her sadness about her son's condition. She said that her son used to play with his siblings but now he tends to hide and talk to himself.
“The hospital told me that they could no longer send my son to a regular school because of his health problems. According to them, I now have to send him to a school for children with special needs,” she shared.
The boy's father, Mr. B. Suresh, the family's lawyer Dinesh Muthal and Chairman of the Malaysia-Singapore Workers' Task Force, Mr. S. Dayalan, were also present at the press conference.
On behalf of the family, lawyer Dinesh Muthal said he would file a civil lawsuit. He stated: “This incident has caused a lot of stress for the parents, especially Mogahana, who is three months pregnant. They now have to face the reality that their son will never have a normal life.”
Meanwhile, Mr. Dayalan confirmed that the authorities are investigating the incident. He said that between May 2 and 23, when the boy was being treated, the school did not discuss with the parents the punishment of having to stand in the sun.
Ampang Jaya city police chief earlier confirmed that police had completed their investigation and transferred the case file to the deputy public prosecutor's office.
