"Avatar 2" reached $2.2433 billion, surpassing "Titanic" to become the third highest-grossing film of all time at the box office.

According to Variety, after more than two months of global release, Avatar: The Way of Water has surpassed Titanic ($2.2428 billion) to take the third spot on the list of highest-grossing films of all time. The project is now behind Avatar ($2.92 billion) and Avengers: Endgame ($2.7 billion).

Director James Cameron has three of the four highest-grossing films on the box office charts. "He's continuing to outdo himself," said Shawn Robbins, a box office tracker for BoxOfficePro. "Cameron has proven he knows how to reach a modern audience."

Experts say one reason Avatar: The Way of Water did so well was the high ticket prices of Imax. Cameron's film earned more than $250 million in those theaters alone - an achievement on par with the total revenue of many commercial blockbusters in Hollywood in recent years.

Disney spent about $460 million to produce and promote Avatar: The Way of Water, making it one of the most expensive film projects in history. It took James Cameron about 13 years to develop and complete the work.

The plot picks up where the first film from 2009 left off, following Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldana), Na'vi members of the Omaticaya tribe. They adopt a human son and start a family with children on Pandora. However, the enemy returns, forcing the Na'vi to fight to protect their home once again.

Titanic was released in 1997, based on the 1912 shipwreck. The film was a box office success, winning 11 Oscars. The project was directed by Canadian filmmaker James Cameron, and stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet.
