Three 7-seat cars and a 4-seat car collided on the Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay highway, causing a long traffic jam. Traffic police had to close the entrance from Highway 51 to divert traffic.
At around 11am on February 1, a 7-seater car was traveling on the Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay Expressway, heading from Ho Chi Minh City to Dong Nai. While traveling on Long Thanh Bridge, the car suddenly crashed into the back of a 4-seater car in front. Two other 7-seater cars also rushed forward, creating a chain of collisions.
At the scene, 4 cars were damaged in the front and rear, with deployed airbags blocking part of the lane. The accident occurred at the same time as a large number of vehicles from Ho Chi Minh City were traveling to many provinces for Tet, causing a traffic jam on the highway lasting more than 5 km for more than an hour.
Traffic police then had to close the highway entrance from Highway 51, directing traffic to Highway 1 to regulate and reduce congestion. After more than 13 hours, the vehicles involved in the accident were removed, and traffic moved slowly through the area.
A representative of the Highway Traffic Control Patrol Team No. 6 (Team 6 - Traffic Police Department) said the accident did not cause any casualties. The force actively diverted traffic to limit congestion during the peak days of Tet.
Ho Chi Minh City - Dau Giay - Long Thanh is the expressway with the highest traffic volume in the country in 2024 with 23.2 million vehicles. During holidays and Tet, this route has more than 100,000 vehicles passing through. According to the Vietnam Expressway Corporation (VEC), due to exceeding the design capacity, traffic congestion is becoming increasingly serious on this expressway.
The Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay Expressway is 55 km long, passing through Ho Chi Minh City and Dong Nai. Since its opening in 2015, the expressway has had dozens of vehicle fires and accidents. The route is being planned to double the width of the section through Ho Chi Minh City, from 4 to 8 lanes.
