Four foreigners were injured in a stabbing incident on June 11 in a park in northeastern China’s Jilin Province. According to initial information, all four victims were Americans.

According to US officials and media, the incident occurred when the four people were visiting a temple in Beishan Park when a man suddenly attacked them with a knife. The motive of the suspect is currently unknown.

The victims were from Cornell University in the US state of Iowa and were participating in an academic exchange program with a partner school, Beihua University in Jilin city, in the province of the same name.

In an emailed statement, a US State Department spokesman said the US was aware of the incident.

Meanwhile, on social network X, Iowa state congresswoman Mariannette Miller-Meeks said she is working through diplomatic channels to ensure the victims receive treatment and medical care so they can return home.

According to US data, there are currently nearly 900 American students studying at schools in China as part of student exchanges between the two countries. Meanwhile, in the opposite direction, there are more than 290,000 Chinese students studying in the US.

President Xi Jinping this year pledged to invite 50,000 American students to participate in academic programs in China to enhance people-to-people exchanges between the two countries.
