The number of children under 5 years old in Hai Duong with whooping cough has been increasing recently, scattered in 11 districts and cities in the province.
According to the Hai Duong Provincial Center for Disease Control, from the beginning of the year to December 3, the whole province recorded 55 cases of whooping cough, while in the same period in 2023, there were no cases.
These cases are mainly children under 5 years old, scattered in 11 districts and cities in the province. In particular, they are concentrated in Hai Duong city (12 cases), Nam Sach district (10 cases), Thanh Mien district (7 cases)... Kinh Mon town alone has not had any cases of whooping cough. The most recent case of whooping cough is a 40-day-old patient in Gia Loc district. The patient is not old enough to be vaccinated with a vaccine containing whooping cough.
Whooping cough is an acute infectious disease that can spread rapidly through the respiratory tract. The disease occurs in all ages, but more than 90% of cases are in children under 1 year old who have not been vaccinated or have not received all 3 basic doses. The younger the child, the more severe the disease and the more complications, with the risk of death.
Whooping cough tends to increase in Hai Duong because children have not been fully vaccinated or vaccinated at the wrong time. Adults carrying the whooping cough virus but not showing symptoms when in contact with children, especially infants, can also cause children to be infected with the virus and develop the disease.
