In a news release on October 16, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said these young men were determined to participate in a "sacred war to destroy the enemy with the weapons of revolution."

Photos released by KCNA show large numbers of young North Koreans in neat rows signing applications to join the military.

The exercise comes amid heightened tensions on the Korean peninsula, with more than one million young men registering to join the Korean People's Army in just two days, according to KCNA.

Recently, inter-Korean relations have continuously increased tension.

Most recently, at noon on October 15, the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JSC) of the South Korean Armed Forces announced that the North Korean army had destroyed roads leading to South Korea on the east and west sides of the Korean Peninsula.

In video footage provided by the South Korean military, explosions can be seen on roads in the inter-Korean border area, while North Korean soldiers and trucks are mobilized to the scene.

According to JCS, the South Korean military is enhancing its surveillance capabilities and combat readiness.

The blasts came after Pyongyang pledged last week to completely cut off inter-Korean roads and railways and continue to fortify areas on the North Korean side of the border.

Pyongyang also said it had informed the US military of the move to “prevent any misjudgment and unintended conflict”.

North and South Korea are connected by road and rail along the Gyeongui Line, which connects the South Korean western border city of Paju with North Korea's Kaesong, and the Donghae Line along the east coast.

North Korea's destruction of the road connecting South Korea comes amid worsening inter-Korean relations.

Tensions have escalated as North Korea has accused South Korea of sending unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) into its capital Pyongyang's airspace three times this month.

After the incident, Kim Yo Jong, the powerful sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, warned of a “terrible disaster” if South Korean drones continued to fly over the North Korean capital.

South Korea neither confirmed nor denied the allegations, but warned that North Korea would see the “end of its regime” if it caused any harm to the South Korean people.
