The image of professional military major Tran Binh Phuc, Deputy Captain of the Mass Mobilization Team, Hon Chuoi Border Guard Station, teaching students and spreading literacy on a remote island has become familiar.
Teacher in green uniform
Hon Chuoi Island belongs to Song Doc town, Tran Van Thoi district (Ca Mau), located nearly 32 km west of the mainland, the island area is about 7 km2.2. Hon Chuoi Island has a very complex terrain, high slopes, the climate here is very harsh, little rain, lots of sunshine with two distinct windy seasons.
Hon Chuoi has a self-governing group of people with nearly 50 households and more than 150 people. The islanders live mainly by cage fish farming and fishing.
The first days of setting foot on the island, the image of dirty children following their parents to raise fish in cages "heartbroken" young soldier Tran Binh Phuc. There was no medical station or school on the island, so many families on the island were illiterate, the future of the children was very bleak.
Major Phuc asked for permission to open a class to teach children how to read and write. The charity class on Hon Chuoi Island was officially established, built temporarily. By 2016, with the support of young volunteers, the class had been invested in a spacious facility worth over 500 million VND.
Because he had no teaching experience, in order to teach different grades, teacher Phuc had to stay up all night to study and prepare lesson plans. Teacher Phuc said that many times he had to practice teaching by himself, holding chalk and writing on the board, teaching alone to gain experience before he could confidently convey it to his students.
Visiting the charity class of teacher in green uniform Tran Binh Phuc, I saw 3 long boards attached to 3 walls in different directions. The class currently has 12 students from grade 1 to grade 5, many of whom are in difficult circumstances and orphans.
Students of all grades sit in a fixed position facing the board to study, only Mr. Phuc moves around the classroom to teach each student. After finishing the lesson, he gives the students homework to do and then continues to teach students with another board.
After observing for a long time, we saw that the students in Mr. Phuc's charity class were very attentive in their studies. While he was teaching this class, the students from other classes, although sitting nearby, were not affected.
Nguyen Ngoc Thai, a 5th grade student at the charity class on Hon Chuoi Island, has an older brother, Nguyen Thai Chau, who also studied there.
"The teacher enthusiastically asked me questions over and over again to help me remember. If I didn't understand, the teacher would explain again until I understood," said Thai.
“To avoid distraction, I proactively arrange classes that do not overlap. If grade 3 students study math today, grade 5 students study literature, or vice versa, so that the lessons of one class do not affect the other. At first, the learning atmosphere of the combined class was a bit diluted, but over time the students got used to it,” said teacher Phuc.
A good tree bears good fruit.
For more than 15 years, “ferryman” Tran Binh Phuc has been attached to the charity class on Hon Chuoi Island. Teacher Phuc cannot remember all of them, but only counts about 60 students who have studied in the class. Among them, 6 students have graduated from university and have good jobs.
After acquiring basic knowledge, some children have gone on to vocational training and have stable jobs. Up to now, no student of the charity class has been involved in social evils.
The responsibility and affection of soldiers on remote islands like Mr. Phuc is the bond that connects the military and people, helping the people unite with the armed forces to carry out the special political task of protecting the sea and islands of the Fatherland.
In addition to his duties as a teacher, Mr. Phuc also encourages families with school-age children to participate in charity classes. Major Phuc also participates in repairing houses, developing the economy, and helping local people overcome the consequences of natural disasters.
Explaining the reason for teaching for the past 15 years, Mr. Phuc emphasized the sense of responsibility of a soldier and his affection for his students. "The improvement of the level and life of the students on Hon Chuoi Island is my motivation. I feel that I have not done much. Although teaching is a part-time job, I want to stay longer to teach my children," Mr. Phuc said.
Having worn the uniform for 28 years and worked on Hon Chuoi Island for 15 years, teacher Phuc has celebrated Tet on the island for the same number of years. Teacher Phuc is an active factor in connecting the army and people on the island. He is considered by his superiors, teammates, and people to be a typical example of studying and following Ho Chi Minh's ideology, morality, and style. With his achievements, Major Phuc has received many certificates of merit from the Ministry of Education and Training, the Ministry of National Defense, etc.
On the island far from the mainland, the relationship between the army and the people is always united. Thanks to Mr. Phuc's class, no child on the island is illiterate. The love and solidarity between the army and the people is building Hon Chuoi Island to become better every day. The people have been living in peace, clinging to the sea together with the armed forces to firmly protect the sovereignty of the sea and islands of the Fatherland.
