Nigeria and Ivory Coast will create a dream final at AFCON 2023 after overcoming South Africa and DR Congo in the semi-finals.
The first semi-final of AFCON 2023 saw a dramatic clash between Nigeria and South Africa. Troost-Ekong gave Nigeria the lead from the penalty spot in the 67th minute. Teboho Mokoena equalized 1-1 for South Africa in the 90th minute, also from the penalty spot.
The match became more tense in extra time and South Africa was reduced to 10 men. Center back Grant Kekana fouled Terem Moffi to prevent him from getting one-on-one with the goalkeeper and was shown a straight red card.
After 120 minutes of 1-1 draw, the two sides had to decide the winner by penalty shootout. Nigeria won 4-2 when only Ola Aina missed, while South Africa had 2 players fall on the 11m mark: Evidence Makgopa and Teboho Mokoena.
In the other semi-final, Ivory Coast defeated DR Congo 1-0 to advance to the final against Nigeria. Striker Sebastien Haller was the hero for the AFCON 2023 hosts, scoring the only goal in the 65th minute.
