The President commuted the death sentence to life imprisonment for death row inmate Dang Van Hien, who was involved in a land dispute case that resulted in a brawl that left 16 people injured and dead in 2016.
On the morning of September 16, at the provincial police detention camp, authorized by the Supreme People's Court, the Dak Nong Provincial People's Court announced the President's decision to commute the death sentence to life imprisonment for death row inmate Dang Van Hien (46 years old, temporarily residing in Quang Truc commune, Tuy Duc district).
The leader of the Dak Nong Provincial Police Detention Center said that during his sentence at the detention center, Dang Van Hien was fully aware of his violations, repented, reformed, and complied with the rules and regulations of the detention center.
"The President's commutation of the death sentence is a lenient and humane policy of the Party and State for Dang Van Hien," said the leader of the Dak Nong Provincial Police Prison.
At the decision announcement, Mr. Dang Van Hien expressed his gratitude to the Party, State, President and all levels and sectors for considering the request for clemency of Dang Van Hien's family.
"This is a chance for me to start my life over. I promise to continue to reform well so that I can soon have a chance to return to my family," Mr. Hien said.

In 2008, the Dak Nong Provincial People's Committee leased 1,079 hectares of forest land in sub-area 1535 to Long Son Company to carry out an agricultural and forestry production project. However, some households encroached on the land to grow cashews and coffee and transferred it to other households, including Mr. Hien's family.
On the morning of October 23, 2016, more than 30 employees of Long Son Company brought in machinery and weapons to bulldoze and destroy cashew and coffee trees of Mr. Hien's house and two other households.
When he discovered that Long Son Company's people had arrived, Mr. Hien brought out a gun but was stopped by a group of people from this company. Mr. Hien fired a shot into the air, but the Long Son Company's people threw rocks back.
Mr. Hien then ran into the house and fired several shots at the Long Son Company group.
Hearing the news, Ninh Viet Binh also took a gun and ran to Mr. Hien's house to support. Both of them went to the leveled area and shot and killed 3 people and injured 13 others.
Then, Mr. Hien surrendered.
