In recent days, images and videos on social media have shown hospitals in China overwhelmed by cases of the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV). This is one of the common causes of respiratory infections, especially in young children, the elderly and those with weakened immune systems. The disease has flu-like symptoms, raising concerns about another health crisis after Covid-19.

However, Beijing has been trying to reassure the public about the severity of the situation, describing it as an annual winter phenomenon. On January 4, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said respiratory infections usually peak at this time of year.

"The Chinese government cares about the health of its citizens and tourists. Traveling in my country is still safe," said Ms. Mao.

Asked about hospital overcrowding and reports of rising respiratory illnesses, she said people’s symptoms were less severe and the scale of the outbreak was smaller than last year. She also urged residents and visitors to refer to guidance from the National Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

The spike in respiratory illnesses across China in the past few days has been reminiscent of similar outbreaks during the Covid-19 era. Media in neighboring countries such as Indonesia, India and Japan have also advised their citizens to be aware of the situation and take necessary precautions.

HMPV causes flu-like symptoms that can lead to serious respiratory problems, especially in children and vulnerable groups. The virus causes upper and lower respiratory tract infections. The disease was first identified in 2001, but there is no vaccine to prevent it.

Symptoms of HMPV are similar to those of the flu, including: cough, fever, nasal congestion, and difficulty breathing. However, in severe cases, the virus can lead to complications such as bronchitis or pneumonia. Depending on the severity of each case, the incubation period lasts from 3 to 7 days, and full recovery may take a while longer.

HMPV is spread through the air as well as through close contact, when an infected person coughs or sneezes. The virus remains active on the surface of objects at room temperature, so touching the object can also make people sick.

HMPV and Covid-19 are both respiratory illnesses that cause cough, fever, nasal congestion, sore throat and difficulty breathing. They are both spread through respiratory droplets.
