China leads the world in overseas tourism spending

In 2023, Chinese tourists' spending on outbound tourism will reach $196.5 billion, regaining its position as the world's top spending country, according to UN Tourism.

The United Nations Tourism Organization (UN Tourism) 2023 Global Tourism Index released in early June showed that China leads in outbound tourism spending. The 2023 global tourism index is ranked by categories: top spending countries on tourism, highest revenue and most visited destinations.

After three years of decline in 2020-2022, the Chinese tourist market's outbound tourism spending in 2023 will reach 196.5 billion USD. The US is in second place - 150 billion USD, Germany is in third place - 112 billion USD, the UK is in fourth place - 110 billion USD and France is in fifth place with 49 billion USD. The top 10 spending countries in 2023 also include Canada, Italy, India, Russia and South Korea.

India has jumped from 14th place in 2019 to 8th place in 2023, affirming the country's importance as a source market in many destinations, according to UN Tourism.

Vietnam ranks 40th globally in terms of spending on overseas travel in 2023 with 7.8 billion USD.

The country with the highest number of international visitors in the world is France, with 100 million. Spain is second with 85 million, the US is third - 66 million, Italy is fourth - 57 million and Turkey is fifth - 55 million. The top 10 most visited destinations in 2023 also include Mexico, the UK, Germany, Greece and Austria. Compared to pre-pandemic 2019, Italy, Türkiye, Mexico, Germany and Austria all moved up one place.

Vietnam ranked 23rd with 12.6 million arrivals and Thailand ranked 11th with 28.15 million arrivals. If compared in the Asia-Pacific region, Thailand has the leading number of international visitors, Vietnam ranked 6th.

In terms of international tourism revenue, the US leads the list, earning 176 billion USD in 2023. The top 5 countries with the highest international tourism revenue in the world also include Spain with 92 billion USD, UK with 74 billion USD, France with 69 billion USD and Italy with 56 billion USD.

Thailand ranked 16th globally in terms of revenue with 27.9 billion USD. Vietnam's international tourism revenue ranked 19 places behind Thailand, ranking 35th globally with 92 billion USD.
