An unusually cold winter is ravaging the US state of Texas, bringing with it fierce snowstorms and a very surprising thing: exploding trees!
A tree falls during a snowstorm in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
According to Newsweek, in sub-zero temperatures, the frozen sap inside the tree trunks caused “loud explosions” that sounded like gunshots. The “explosions” didn’t actually shatter the trees into pieces, but they left visible scars on the surface.
Temperatures in Texas have dropped to -20 degrees Celsius
Meanwhile, NBC DFW quoted Texas resident Lauren Rever as saying that frozen sap caused trees near her home to “explode” overnight. Eventually, one tree fell, dragging several others along, destroying Rever’s shed.
"All of a sudden, you just hear a big bang and two or three trees fall down," she said.
According to experts, this can sometimes cause large cracks in the tree trunks as if someone had tried to chop them in half.
Freezing temperatures freeze the water in the sap, causing excess weight along the branches and causing the tree to fall.
Recent powerful snowstorms have caused massive power outages across the US, leaving 300,000 Texans without light and heating, and forcing the cancellation of more than 4,800 flights.
Earlier in the middle of last week, the US also witnessed more than 1,000 flights being canceled as storms and severe weather began to invade many areas of the country.
Frozen branches also add extra weight to the tree.
