The South Korean military said North Korea fired a short-range ballistic missile into the sea off its east coast on the morning of March 19.

The South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said the missile was launched by North Korea from the Tongchang-ri area in North Pyongan Province at 11:05 a.m. local time.

Japan's Defense Ministry also said the object North Korea had just launched was likely a ballistic missile. NHK, citing several sources, said the North Korean missile appeared to have fallen outside Japan's exclusive economic zone.

North Korea's latest launch comes just days after the leaders of Japan and South Korea held a summit in Tokyo, agreeing to step up security cooperation to counter growing threats.

On March 16, North Korea launched a Hwasong-17 intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM). Pyongyang's missile launches came as South Korea and the United States are conducting the Freedom Shield exercise, which is expected to last 11 days. This is the largest exercise between the two allies in many years.
