On August 17, White House National Security Council Coordinator for Strategic Communications John Kirby said that US President Joe Biden is willing to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un “without preconditions” to discuss the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

“They (North Korea) have not responded positively to the US proposal to negotiate the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, but the proposal is still on the table. We are ready to sit down and negotiate with North Korea without preconditions,” John Kirby said in an interview with Kyodo News.

John Kirby made the remarks a day before President Biden holds a three-way summit with the leaders of Japan and South Korea, where North Korea's rapid development of missiles and nuclear weapons will be a major topic on the agenda.

Meanwhile, Pentagon spokesman Major General Pat Ryder said on August 17 that the US will continue to coordinate with its allies to prevent any potential aggression from North Korea, after information that Pyongyang may be preparing to carry out more provocative moves, including a long-range missile test.

South Korea's National Intelligence Service earlier noted that North Korea could test-launch an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) in protest at a trilateral summit between the leaders of South Korea, Japan and the United States, scheduled to take place in Washington on August 18.

“I’m not going to comment on any intelligence that suggests what North Korea might or might not do,” Major General Pat Ryder told a daily news briefing. “We’ve made it clear that we’re going to remain in close contact with our South Korean and Japanese allies, as well as other partners and allies in the region to make sure we can deter any potential provocations.”
